Hoover’s Alex Dunham on Sonic Youth, Talking Heads and other influences on new podcast
The Regulator Watts & Abilene guitarist is joined by Kevin Williams (of the mighty 90’s UK emo band Fabric) to discuss formative songs with the british hardcore podcast “Screams from the gutter”.
This is my first time hearing this podcast and its great. It’s really a radio show and less of an interview thing. The hosts are 80’s/90’s hardcore guys who still listen to and play new stuff so it’s great for music discovery. And then they bring guests on to play and talk about songs that affected their trajectory. Alex plays tunes from Talking Heads, The Clash and Sonic Youth while Kevin gets into Miles Davis, Talk Talk and an incredible 90’s UK band that I’ve never heard of until now — Dead Wrong.
Dunham and Williams go way back to DC in ’92 so there’s a heavy “old friends” vibe that makes this a fun listen. They also get into a discussion about desert island Dischord discs, Alex’s hatred of guitar pedals, and the mechanics that allowed Lungfish “to write 70,000 songs”.

New podcast talks to the bassist on “Necrophones”, “Artificial Horizon” and “The Unanimous Hour” and dives deep into the Lungfish song “Parthogenesis” with Sonny Kay of The VSS.
