“The Arm-Wrestling King of Baltimore is Daniel Higgs”: Nathan Bell on his time in Lungfish

New podcast talks to the bassist on “Necrophones”, “Artificial Horizon” and “The Unanimous Hour” and dives deep into the Lungfish song “Parthogenesis” with Sonny Kay of The VSS.

The Unanimous Hour might be the most Lungfish podcast that there could possibly be about Lungfish: each episode thus far has been about one song from the band’s 1991 debut “Necklace of Heads”. I’m praying that this doesn’t stop and some 41 episodes from now we get to hear an analysis of the opening instrumental on “Sound In Time”.

Host Brian Gathy splits each episode in two parts — the first an exegesis on a single song with another musician and Lungfish fanatic (Brian — when you get to episode 48 I’m available to talk about “X-Ray The Pharoah”) and the second an interview with a band member or someone in the band’s orbit. Guests thus far have included drummer Mitchell Feldstein and Gathy’s former Amber Inn bandmate Scott Torguson (now of the great Wet The Rope).

Eposide Six brings the first part of an interview with bassist Nathan Bell and — as you can tell from the quote in the headline — it’s fantastic. For the discussion portion Gathy talks to album cover designer Sonny Kay (and member of such influential outfits as The VSS and Angel Hair). Both played in the Colorado band Savalas who opened up Lungfish’s Denver show in 1991 and are able to talk about the band in the context of the time.
