Listen to a janky remix of Converge’s “Under Duress”

HALIFAX A.D. builds a Jim O’Rourke-inspired track from Converge samples

Last spring I made a whole bunch of loops from the Under Duress multitrack files at Isolate/Create that ranged from single bass stabs to lines of feedback to full guitar riffs. I played with them quite a bit but never really got into picking a direction of what to do with it and I put them aside. A couple weeks ago I revisited my working file, slowed it way down and started again with this weird not-quite on-time cymbal loop. I wasn’t in a position where I could spend a lot of time making a remix so I just set the goal of making a composition that I could listen to and say “This makes sense” which is what I think I ended up with. I was definitely thinking about Jim O’Rourke’s early 90’s cut-up rock group Brise-Glace (though wasn’t listening to it to avoid corruption) when I made this and for that reason there are no additional drums or instruments beyond the original Converge samples.

The samples were extracted using Audacity, the song was made in the iOS app Auxy and then lightly mastered in Adobe Audition.
