I wrestle with constant doubt and insecurity about... well, everything, but, man alive, do I struggle with releasing music (which I know that some of you will believe is a good thing — “That’s how you know you’re holding yourself to a standard”). This piece was made a year ago. I knew it was good the first time I listened to it; I knew it was good 3 months later; and I still know it’s good (I recognize that you may not share my opinion but that should have no bearing on my feelings on the matter). Regardless the potential complaints ring in my head—“Is this even good?”; “Is releasing this a distraction from making making HALIFAX music?’; “What if I actually have terrible taste and this sucks?”; “If it IS good then why aren’t you giving it a physical release?” and so on and so forth into eternity. I guess the positive thing is that you are reading this and the song is available below so I ignored the internal critic and put it out.

This song is the first to be released under my own name. I didn’t think I’d ever put out anything using my real name and I’m not sure if that is because I believe that aliases are cooler (though obviously they are) or because I’m scared of seeming self-important but the one thing that seems very straightforward is that this un-complicates things. It’s my name and I wrote the song. Quick maths.

Let’s talk about the music. “A New Point of Entry” was created with an electric guitar plugged directly into my iPhone using a signal chain in BandLab. The result straddles the line between harsh noise and drone metal. The whole production is defined by a bass-heavy roar that every other element interacts with. Low-end guitar tones get cut and cancelled by high-end electronic sounds. It’s like walking in the woods during a thunderstorm while your phone keeps beeping with an emergency weather alert. The storm eventually clears out enough to let a primitive riff breathe but only for a couple of bars then it’s back to roaring thunder.
