Members of June of 44 and Hallux make lo-fi beats as Kewl Haro

Sean Meadows (June of 44 & Lungfish) teamed up with members of Hallux and La Lus and quietly released this weird, engaging record in 2018.

This whole deal is both totally unexpected and totally refreshing. Sean Meadows got together with Jake Klotz of doom band Hallux and the un-Googleable La Lus and Virgil Rhames (also of La Lus) for 2 weeks to record onto a 4-track. They recorded 7 tapes of material which Meadows then shaped into this self-titled album (released on Bandcamp/Soundcloud in 2018).

Unexpected because nothing in Sean Meadows’ discography really hints at something this playful and because I have zero context for La Lus. Its weird enough that I had to double check that this was the same Sean Meadows.

Kewl Haro is refreshing because its so utterly playful and random. The dozen songs jump from ramshackle hip hop to drone (on the aptly titled “Drone”) to early electro jams. I honestly didn’t think I’d listen to this more than once due to how eclectic it is but the spirit of the recordings —the fuzz and the funk — makes it a repeat listener. Fans of old Grand Royal and K stuff will love this.
