Slow Death (ex-Cable) return with an evolved sound

The new self-titled record moves away from thrash into 90s noise-rock territory.

Slow Death’s debut LP Hate-Filled World was a nice blast of 80s thrash/death metal cross-over complete with gory cover art and song titles like “Daggers of Hate” and “Suicide Man”. Singer Randy Larsen (of Connecticut hardcore/noise rock/sludge vets Cable and post-hardcore outfit Broken Flowers and dude who regularly and rightly made fun of my shitty taste in music circa 1995) is a huge horror/metal head so it didn’t seem unexpected for him to go there. While I don’t share the nostalgia for this period I did always replay the album at least once with each listen.

So when I saw the new record with suitably gross Gunsho art I thought we were in for more of the same but the opening riff on “Coke Punks” immediately signals a  direction toward 90s noise rock. Heavy on swagger and groove but still from a hardcore background. Kind of like they replaced the metal part of their sound with Unsane. Or maybe more accurately a bunch of hardcore kids in their 40s decided to make an AmRep record.

Still gross just a different kind of gross and very, very good.
